  • Leopoldo Zea was born on June 30, 1912

1942-1948

  • Faculty member at the Preparatory National School

1944

  • Becomes a faculty member of the Department of Philosophy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)

1947

  • At UNAM, founded the Seminar on the History of Ideas in Latin America

1954

  • Becomes a researcher at the Institute for Philosophical Research

1955

  • Employed as a member of the Center for Philosophical Studies at UNAM

1960-1970

  • Chair of the Department of Philosophy at UNAM

1967

  • From ’67 onward, worked to professionalize Latin American studies at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels

1970-1973

  • General director of Cultural Diffusion [alt. trans. Dissemination] at UNAM

1978-1994

  • Founded, coordinated and directed the Coordinating Center and Diffuser [alt. trans. Disseminator] of Latin American Studies

1980

  • Received the National Science and Arts award

1985

  • Received the Juchimán de Plata award

1985

  • Honored as Doctor Honoris Causa by UNAM

1986-2004

  • Directed, among other publications, Cuadernos Americanos

1987

  • Received the Gabriela Mistral Inter-American Prize for Culture, awarded by the Organization of American States

1994

  • Honored as Doctor Honoris Causa by the Russian Academy of Science

1997

  • Honored as Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Santiago de Chile

2000

  • Received the Belisario Domínguez Medal, awarded by the Mexican Senate

2004

  • Leopoldo Zea died on June 8, 2004
